About Felixstowe
Felixstowe is Suffolk's seaside town - and one that tends to surprise people who haven't been before.
It sits on a peninsula between the River Orwell and the River Deben, jutting out into the North Sea at the eastern edge of England. On one side, a four-mile seafront of sand and shingle beach, Victorian gardens, and a promenade that stretches almost without interruption from Landguard Point in the south to Felixstowe Ferry in the north. On the other, one of the busiest container ports in Europe - handling more cargo than any other UK port. The two sit oddly alongside each other, and somehow that contrast is part of what makes Felixstowe worth visiting.
The town became a fashionable seaside resort in the 1880s, developed largely by Colonel George Tomline. It drew Edwardian visitors in their thousands, and much of that architecture remains - the grand seafront hotels, the broad tree-lined avenues, the ornate Spa Pavilion. There's an 'Old Felixstowe' to the north, quieter and residential, quite different in character to the seafront bustle. And down at Felixstowe Ferry, at the mouth of the River Deben, you'll find a handful of cottages, a boatyard, a couple of riverside pubs, and a small foot ferry that has crossed to Bawdsey since 1894.
It's a town that rewards a full day. Often two.

Landmarks
Landguard Fort is the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England — a Dutch raid in 1667. Open for guided tours, with an audio presentation covering its history from Tudor coastal defence to Cold War listening post. Alongside it, Landguard Nature Reserve covers a shingle spit important for migrating birds. The Felixstowe Museum on Viewpoint Road has fourteen rooms of social and military history, run by volunteers, open weekend afternoons May to October. Six Martello Towers stand along the coast north of town — built during the Napoleonic Wars, visible from the coastal path. The Spa Pavilion on the seafront hosts touring productions, comedy nights, and community events. At Landguard Point, the John Bradfield Viewing Area offers arguably the best free show in Suffolk: enormous container ships passing within a few hundred metres.

The seafront has the full range — fish and chips, ice cream, cafés with sea views. Down at Felixstowe Ferry, The Shed sells fresh fish and the Ferry Café does fish and chips with a view across the Deben. The Viewpoint Café at Landguard Point does good coffee and all-day breakfasts with a ringside seat for the container ships. The town centre has independent cafés, pubs, and restaurants — quality varies, but there are good options if you look.
Where to Stay
