The Town That Remembers Itself
The Festival of Heritage – Felixstowe runs from 14–21st September 2026, with Heritage Open Days on 19–20 September, across more than 20 venues in Felixstowe.Late September in Felixstowe…
carries a particular silence. A hint of autumn settles in the air. Yet, the town is far from sleepy.
Instead, a different kind of energy stirs. It is, by most measures, one of the premier historic vehicle events in East Anglia. This year, though, Felixstowe's own heritage takes centre stage. This is a chance to step inside buildings usually closed to the public.
It's an opportunity to hear stories from the town's past. Perhaps even see something new in the familiar. The Felixstowe Society organises the Festival of Heritage.
They offer a week of free access to over 20 locations. The Society has championed Felixstowe's history and environment since 1953. They have a long track record of preserving the town's unique character. Their work includes projects like restoring the Spa Pavilion's iconic 'Winkie' sign. That local landmark might otherwise have been lost. So when you walk through a door that's usually locked, you are, in a small way, part of keeping that history intact. Which is a rather good reason to be there.
The festival culminates in the national Heritage Open Days weekend, 19–20 September. This is when the majority of venues throw open their doors. Expect guided walks along the seafront. There will be talks on local history. Exhibitions will detail Felixstowe's evolution from a quiet fishing village to a bustling port and popular resort. The programme is extensive. It covers everything from maritime history to Victorian architecture. There are family events too. It's an opportunity to see the town through fresh eyes. To appreciate the layers of history beneath the modern façade. It's, well, worth exploring.
